Abay Deol learning Krav Maga

Interestingly, Akshaye Khanna was to play the lead in the film initially, when director Navdeep Singh was to direct it for Nikhil Advani’s production company. But the two parted ways due to differences and Deol stepped in to back his director ofManorama Six Feet Under.

Deol is so fascinated by Krav Maga that whenever he got time off  between shots while filming Aisha with Sonam Kapoor, he’d practise it with his trainer. Basra, which sees Deol in the role of a RAW officer, has extensive action sequences. And Deol wants to ensure that he does his stunts perfectly. Singh is planning to start the film early next year with a schedule in Iraq.

Mumbai: The different Deol boy, Abhay, is going all out to prepare himself for his home production Basra that will see him do action for the first time in his career. After Hrs has learnt that the actor has started training in the Israeli hand-to-hand deadly combat tactics Krav Maga. By doing this he joins Akshay Kumar, the only hero in India who can perform the art and international faces like Angelina Jolie, Michelle Yeoh and Keanu Reeves.

This deadly skill will see Abhay hit a variety of fast crippling attacks to vulnerable body parts of his enemies. He has to go through a mixed aerobic and anaerobic workout and has to also use heavy pads to protect his body from damage while training.

“The film will see me fight like a street fighter and I’m learning really fast. It is fun and I have to learn many things if I have to convincingly play an action hero. Plus, it’s my home production, I cannot take any shortcuts,” Abhay told DNA.

Sources close to the film reveal that the young actor has also set up a training area where he would look to challenge his body reactions and defense skills through simulated attacks. This will make him faster and agile at offense and defense. Abhay has been called a perfectionist by many critics and this clearly shows his diligent approach to cinema.

“I always believe that you have to know something to perform it with ease and convince people. Nobody buys a fake and if you are not good at something you are doing, it always shows. I know I have to perfect myself in action because that’s never been my USP,” he says.

When not fighting in the arena, Abhay is traveling the world visiting film festivals in Venice, Toronto, Cannes, Tribeca where he has also lectured on cinema. The actor is ecstatic that even though he has not done the so-called Bollywood masala movies, he has managed to rub shoulders with Hollywood icons like Martin Scorsese, Robert de Niro, Jodie Foster, Matt Damon among others.

“Hollywood is very excited and appreciative of Indian cinema. Whenever I have met people who are greats in their own rights, they have been very inquisitive about our industry. This just shows that Indian cinema has a global presence and it is a huge achievement. There is scope for everyone to get the spotlight even if you are not a traditional Bollywood movie star. That’s a healthy change for our industry,” he ends.

Israeli self-defence

The setting is somewhat similar at Ultimate Tactical and Combat studio in Saket. It offers Krav Maga – an Israeli form of self-defence and combat tactics – training, engaging young women, clad in black, in hand-to-hand combats.

In Saket, portraits of the famed Israeli Krav Maga trainers and a poster that reads ‘personal protection is not an option, it’s a responsibility’, serve as sources of inspiration.

Another poster, of Jennifer Lopez in Enough – a film in which Lopez learns Krav Maga to take on her abusive husband – is also another motivator.

“Recently, we trained a woman who was struggling to tackle her abusive live-in partner,” says Vicky Kapoor, director, Ultimate Tactical, and the best known trainer of Krav Maga in the country.

“She finally managed to drive him out with the help of Krav Maga. We have trained 200 women as per their requirements in the last two years.”

Unsafe city

Not surprising, considering the level of danger a woman faces in the national capital. Among 35 major cities in India, Delhi accounted for 31.2 per cent of total rape cases and 34.7 per cent cases of kidnapping and abduction of women in 2007.

Numbers don’t lie. Most women who practice at these studios have stories to share.

“Last year at a bus-stand near Gargi College, I was groped by a middle-aged man,” says Minakshi Bhardwaj, 22, a student of St Stephen’s College. “I cried for help, but no one came to my rescue. Today, I feel more confident on the streets.”

Mary Kurkalang, 31, who works in a publishing firm said, “Men have grabbed me from behind so many times on the streets. The training has really helped,” she says.

Street fights

The studio lessons are also practiced on the streets. “The idea is to give practical lessons in dealing with various situations that they might face in real life,” says Kapoor, who normally receives 10 inquiries in a day from women who want to know how Krav Maga can help them defend themselves.

Women also get tips on how to use things like mobile phones, hand bags, pens, and even duppttas as weapons.

“Physical drill teaches women to use quick reflexes to attack assailants’ soft spots like throat, groin and nose,” says Shihan Nawal Datta, a martial arts trainer. This new breed of laptop-wielding trainers say many parents are encouraging daughters to join classes.

“My daughters are learning martial arts. One is even building muscles. Martial arts training has instilled discipline and confidence in them,” says Manjari Sharma, a teacher.

Announced early this week, the innovative ‘Aaj New Kya Kiya’ contest facilitated all the listeners across Delhi and Mumbai to win exciting prizes and add spice to their daily routine. The Israeli army’s self-defence tactics for civilians are a fave among IT professionals

Did you watch helplessly as goons mugged you and took off with your valuables? Frustrated that you didn’t know what to do as you were pinned to the ground? How about learning to fight back? Well, a bunch of city-based professionals have done just that and what’s more, they are even equipping themselves with skills required during a terror situation. It is Krav Maga — Hebrew for contact combat — the Israeli military’s effective, easy-to-learn system of unarmed self-defence and combat tactics that has caught their fancy.

“Krav Maga training is about recreating realistic scenarios and relying on the instinctive reactions of human reflexes. It calls for mental agility, attitude and confidence, enhancing the natural strengths of your mind and body. There are no rules in this form of fighting, so striking the groin, eyes, or other vulnerable parts of the body is the key,” says JW Frank, an international Krav Maga instructor.

And his clientele, says Frank, is predominantly young software professionals seeking defence modules against mugging — the single largest crime affecting this community. Pramod Vyasarao, project manager at an IT firm, who’s been training for just over a year, says the combat form has given him a new sense of confidence. “Unlike normal martial arts that take years to master, Krav Maga is very practical and easy to learn. I know I can tackle an attacker and prevent injuries if he has a knife or gun,” he says. Pramod adds that his training has equipped him to deal with terror situations. “There are evacuation drills, do’s and don’ts for hostage situations, gunfire and explosions. For example, we’re told that if an explosion happens nearby, to run away from it, close our ears and keep our mouths open to avoid injuries to the eardrum due to pressure,” he adds.

The anti-terror module, adds Frank, is currently the hot fave among his clients. “They don’t want to be caught unawares and vulnerable when an attack happens,” he says. Women opting for a training module are still few and far between, says Frank. “Women believe that Krav Maga relies on strength and think that may work as a disadvantage for them. But that’s not the case as the combat techniques rely on tactics and mental agility,” explains Frank, adding that there are gender-specific moves. And those women who come in often ask for modules against eve-teasing. Says software professional Laina Emmanuel, who’s been training on and off in Krav Maga since last September, “I enrolled for self defence classes after I was attacked by eve-teasers on the old Airport Road once. Though I managed to fend them off by slapping one of them, the incident scared me. I have since been learning how best to defend myself in such a situation,” she says. prathibha.joy@timesgroup.com

New Delhi, Jan.10 (ANI): Under constant threat of terrorism and urban street crime, all military forces, security & law enforcement agencies, youngsters of India are opting for ”Krav Maga, an Israeli system of self-defence and combat tactics.

In this system, students are instructed in state-of-the-art defensive principles that apply to a variety of threatening attacks that occur during commonly documented street crimes. Defensive maneuvers are combined with simultaneous counter-attacks until all potential danger is eliminated.

This system of martial arts was introduced in India in 2003 by Vicky (Vikram) Kapoor, who began his training in Krav Maga in Israel in 2003. He heads the “Ultimate Tactical & Combat Pvt. Ltd.” as the CEO and Managing Director of the company.

“Because this system is developed on the natural reflexes and natural movement of the body, which makes the system unique and very simple to learn and retain. Unlike controversial martial arts, the Chinese and the Japanese forms which is developed from the animal behavior. If you are learning somebody’’s behavior, you are mastering, perfecting and then using it. So the process of learning and using it takes a lot of time. Whereas in ”Krav Maga”, if I teach you one technique now, you can go out and if somebody attacks you, with an eye you can defend yourself,” Said Vicky Kapoor, Director, Ultimate Tactical and Combat Private Limited.

This system of self-defence is totally different from the other traditional martial arts. A common criticism of the traditional martial arts is the lack of real-life applicability.

Post Mumbai terror attacks; Krav Maga is gaining popularity among youngsters for self-defence.

“We are also aware that at no point of time, I as an individual be better equipped than the terrorist. But it is more of the reaction, speed and frame of mind. If I can maintain my calm, maintain my peace and think rationally and think fast, I can help a lot of people overcome that situation,” said Gaurav Shourie, a trainee.

Krav Maga, literally means ”contact combat”, is highly effective, battle tested, fighting skills and defensive tactics that was first developed in Czechoslovakia in the 1930s by Imi Lichtenfeld.

Krav Maga is the official system of hand-to-hand combat and self-defense employed by the Israeli Defense and Security Forces, the Israeli National and Military Police and its Special Operations and Anti Terrorist Units.

It has been expanded outside the borders of Israel and is very successful in the USA, Canada, Brazil, United Kingdom, France Finland, Sweden, Norway, Germany, Switzerland, Belgium, the Netherlands, Poland, Russia, Japan etc .

It is beginning to make its presence felt in the military and law enforcement sectors in India as well. (ANI)

Bangalore IT Pros train in Israeli Survival Techniques

SOFTWARE PROFESSIONALS like Anoop Ramakrishnan, 24, and many others in the tech industry here are picking up new survival skills – not to endure the economic gloom, but to survive a terror attack or a hostage crisis.

Following the recent terror attacks, techies are queuing up to be trained in anti-terror and hostage survival techniques being imparted as part of Krav Maga, an Israeli school of self-defence and combat tactics. They are being taught how to hold their nerve during a terror attack, ensure minimum injury, how to escape a fire, and avoid being trapped in a stampede during evacuation.

Said Anoop, software professional at Sasken Communications: “We are here to learn to minimize casualties through the concept of muscle memory that is how not to panic but train our muscles to move quickly and save ourselves during an attack.” He has been urging colleagues and friends to take these lessons too. Ditto with Ashish Puri, of Cisco Systems, who is also taking the training. “I have persuaded seven eight colleagues to join these workshops,” he said.

Frank JW, the instructor and in-charge of Bangalore chapter of International Krav Maga Federation, said: “I am currently training 75 people in Bangalore. Most are from the IT industry” Frank said the training sessions are not intended to make “everyone a Superman” but to teach techniques that can come handy – like lying flat on the floor to escape bullets.

Krav-Maga, a system of self-defence and combat tactics, is practiced by people around the world, including numerous prominent personalities such as Hollywood actresses Jennifer Lopez and Angelina Jolie and Indian politician Omar Abdullah.

Krav-Maga, which was developed by the Israeli army, is about enhancing one’s spontaneous reflexes and natural body movements for both self-defence and fitness. “This holistic fitness method is extremely practical and effective besides being simple and easy to learn,” says Vicky Kapoor, regional director and chief instructor at the International Krav-Maga Foundation (India) based in Delhi.

“Krav-Maga increases your flexibility, concentration and presence of mind, body language, muscular as well as cardiovascular stamina, mental endurance, confidence and healthy aggression,” he says. “Since physical fitness is closely interwoven into the system, the workout includes a number of cardiovascular and strength-building exercises, as well as stretching to increase flexibility.

Emphasis is put on speed, endurance, strength, accuracy and coordination, especially for intensive Krav-Maga training,” explains Kapoor.

Further, there are no rigid rules in Krav-Maga. It is not a sport, and there are no competitions. The techniques simply focus on maximizing efficiency in real-life conditions. Krav-Maga in Hebrew means “close combat”; literally, “Krav” means “Combat” and “Maga” means “contact”.

The beginning of the system that we know today as Krav-Maga was developed as “hand-to-hand-combat system” in Hungary and Czechoslovakia in the 1930s to help protect the Jewish community from Nazi militias. This technique was later taught to the Haganah, the Jewish underground army, in the British Mandate of Palestine prior to the establishment of the Jewish state.

After the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948, Krav-Maga was taught to the Israel defence Forces (IDF) School of Combat Fitness.

In 1980, Israeli Krav-Maga experts and interested students in the US came in contact. The following year, a group of six Krav-Maga instructors traveled to the U.S. for demonstrations, mainly at Jewish community centres. However, a demonstration was also held at the New York Field Office of the FBI and its Main Training Center.

Following this, 22 people from the US went to Israel to take a basic Krav-Maga instructor’s course. When they returned to their country, they began to establish training facilities in their areas. The exchanges of experts between the two countries continued and the Krav-Maga training of Law Enforcement personnel in the US began in 1985.

Today, Krav-Maga is practiced by military and law enforcement personnel as well as civilians in more than 45 countries around the world. And it is catching on in India as well.
