Eyal Yanilov (born in 1959) studied Krav-Maga under the personal tutelage of its founder, Imi Sde-Or (Lichtenfeld), and has served as the Grand master’s closest assistant and foremost disciple since the early 1980s. Active in this field since 1973, he is now its most senior instructor. Mr. Yanilov is the only individual who carries the highest grade ever given by Imi (Master level 3/Expert level and holds the unique “Founder’s Diploma of Excellence” (This diploma was given only to two persons, the other – one of Eyal’s top students, Mr. Darren Levine, Expert level 6, of the United States).

Eyal Yanilov started his Krav-Maga training with Mr. Eli Avikzar (one of Imi’s top students at the time) and soon after- wards began to study directly with the founder himself. At an early age, Eyal was instructing at the training studio that Imi had entrusted to Eli Avikzar, and on many occasions assisted and substituted for the Grandmaster in lessons and preparations with students who were to be tested for grades of expert level. At a later stage, when Imi appointed him Head of the Krav-Maga Professional Committee, Eyal was responsible for preparing and updating the Krav-Maga curriculum. In this capacity Eyal had the task of imparting the new developments and accumulated knowledge, changes in techniques, and the latest training methods to the other senior instructors.

In 1984 Grandmaster Imi Sde-Or placed Eyal in charge of preparing the complete and comprehensive series on the Krav-Maga discipline (of which this book is a part). Since then, and until the system’s founder passed away in January 1998, the two were deeply engrossed in the task of writing down the principles of Krav-Maga and clarifying its various techniques.

Since directing the first self-defense instructors course for American citizens, in 1981, Eyal Yanilov has been teaching a large number of Krav-Maga and self-defense instructors courses in many countries around the world, under the auspices of the Israeli Ministry of Education and the International Krav-Maga Federation (IKMF). Eyal, together with his most advanced students who serve as local directors or chief instructors in their countries, are the key force in spreading Krav-Maga teaching throughout the world. Mr. Yanilov is currently serving as Chairman and Chief Instructor of the IKMF, and heads the International School of Krav-Maga. In this capacity, he is in charge of the development, definition, and dissemination of the system.

Mr. Yanilov is a graduate of the School for Trainers and Instructors at the Wingate Institute for Sport and Physical Education, and also holds a degree in Electrical Engineering. He has spent years training fighters of elite units and members of special anti terrorist squads, while teaching at colleges for physical education instructors.

Since the early eighties Eyal has been training different groups, in various seminars and courses: ordinary civilians coming to learn self-defense, military units, police units, executive protection personnel, special units, SWAT teams, and other security-oriented groups in Israel, Europe, South America, and the United States. Within this context, he specializes in improving the fighting skills and general abilities of members of these groups.

Mr. Yanilov’s main objective now is to educate future Krav-Maga instructors around the world, and he always enjoys promoting any such initiative in this direction.

Live Mint Magazine

Gender parity is desirable for individuals and countries, but ultimately likravving your life as a woman involves not just competing with the males but also cherishing those qualities which make both women and men gloriously different and therefore unique.

Tomorrow, the World Economic Forum’s India Economic Summit will begin in New Delhi. Between discukravssions on agriculture and infrastructure is the plenary session titled simply: Investing in Girls, Investingin Development—The Girl Effect.

Gender is the focus of several recent surveys, including the Shriver Report, WEF’s Global Gender Gap Report 2009 and a survey by the Dubai Foundation for Women and Children, which plans to measure the extent of domestic violence and child abuse in the emirate. WEF’s gender report measured the gap between men and women using the usual four factors: economic opportunities, education, health and political participation. Nordic countries came out tops and India fell in the bottom quartile.

The problem with gender reports is that while they can help governments decide policy, and nudge countries to perform better, they offer little to women in terms of how to live or improve their lives. They don’t answer the question: Say you are faced with a thousand little girls, what message would you give them?

I know: It depends on the sample. Well, let’s narrow it down by country and region. Let’s limit it to India. I wouldn’t presume to lecture rural girls given that I know little about their lifestyle. So let’s narrow it to urban Indian teenage girls which in itself is a large enough sample. What would you tell them?

There are macro messages. Learn to love without losing yourself is a key one, given a woman’s congenital desire for harmony; difficulty with saying “No”; and her penchant for spreading herself too thin in the emotion department. There are micro messages about learning self-defence, and managing hormonal cycles. But the bulk of it has to do with nuances, and gender parity reports, as George Bush famously said of himself, “Don’t do nuance”.

Recognizing nuance requires battle worn maturity; to see both the glorious achievements and also the thin limitations of feminism. It involves realizing that being a feminist means different things in Boston and Bengaluru. Bostonians would be aghast if you didn’t call yourself a feminist (and this applies to the men too). In India, let alone Bengaluru, feminism is still an ugly word, particularly in our parents’ generation. Many older Indian women are loath to call themselves feminists because they equate it with aggressive bra-burning types. Entire swathes of women in India—and not just in villages—have no clue what feminism means, nor do they care. Talking about gender parity to a housewife in Saurashtra or my aunt in Salem is meaningless.

[stextbox id="warning" big="true"]They are too bound by tradition and religion to question the status quo, ranging from why only the wives observe the karva chauth fast, to why not hire women drivers trained in krav maga to drop women employees, especially those working late. They are conditioned not to rock the boat.[/stextbox]

So while the message is important, choosing a target audience is equally so and urban Indian girls on the cusp of womanhood are my chosen targets. These are the girls who will implement and live out the findings of today’s gender parity reports. So what would you tell them? What will you tell today’s high school girl students at Chennai’s Vidya Mandir, Delhi’s Loreto Convent, Mumbai’s Cathedral School, or Kolkata’s La Martiniere?

Here’s my message: Gender equality is a myth. Doesn’t exist. Get over it. We are inferior to men in many ways and superior in others. So don’t bother equating yourselves with them. Competing in the world using the male paradigm is setting yourselves up for failure. Instead, choose a different paradigm.

The question then becomes: What’s the paradigm?

Women are surfers. We catch the wave, cope and adjust. We endure. Men are archers. They aim, execute and move on. Gross generalizations, I know, but humour me. Recently, I read two books that relate to this topic. One was The Female Brain by Louann Brizendine and it talks about hormone-induced waves, surges and troughs that affect the way women think and function. Much of her analysis applies only to the West and indeed, America. For instance, she talks about teenage girls being “drama queens”, and while that may be true for urban girls, it does not apply to rural Indian girls who are anything but drama queens. They are quiet, non-assertive, and if anything, too obedient. But the book makes a point of emphasizing how hormones affect women without, I might add, telling us how to use these peaks and valleys to improve our lives.

The second is more of a self-help book by Tal Ben-Shahar, who teaches one of the most popular courses at Harvard University. His course uses exercises, journals and specific questions to elicit and quantify happiness. His book, Happier, isn’t as successful as his course, mostly because asking readers to “name five things that make you happy” is not going to make them do it or think about it but a classroom setting most likely will. Nevertheless, Happier talks about changing paradigms. It suggests using an internal standard to measure success rather than the usual societal measures of money, fame and power.

The Female Brain stresses how women are different and Happier suggests new paradigms. I am merely combining these two ideas and suggesting that we change the paradigm for girl students. Schools and colleges are best equipped to implement this for it involves revamping courses and curriculum. It involves asking questions like how we can train girls to multitask, which is not just an important skill but one that women are better at, according to studies. It encourages career and guidance counsellors to talk to girls about taking advantage of their natural talent for networking and forming communities. It suggests re-examining which competitive sports play to the physiques and talents of girls, unlike sports such as cricket and basketball which have been grandfathered in. It involves looking at the core competencies of girls and allowing those to flourish alongside traditional subjects.

As a feminist, I think women ought to compete on their own terms. As a mostly rational human being and an erstwhile Communist, I think equality (of any kind) is worth aspiring for but is largely a mythical construct. Gender parity is desirable for individuals and countries, but ultimately living your life as a woman involves not just competing with the males but also cherishing those qualities which make us—both women and men—gloriously different and therefore unique.

At the organisation’s Delhi centre, older students get a separate set of strength training and stamina building exercises until they are ready to push the limits.

While the choice of the game changes as you grow older, don’t let age play spoil sport
Former diplomat PC Bhalla was game the instant his nephew suggested a round of squash at the Delhi Gymkhana Club. Though it had been two decades since he last played anything significant, he used to play a lot of cricket in school. By the end of 30 minutes of squash, Bhalla, who was then approaching his 40s, was huffing and puffing, exhausted beyond imagination and “had to spend the next two days battling body stiffness and joint aches”. He ditched his squash racquet immediately and played nothing for the next few years. Bhalla, say doctors, had fallen into the common trap of the mind willing but the body not playing along. And he isn’t alone — many adults keen to improve their fitness ratings learn the hard way that plunging headlong into a vigorous game after a long gap isn’t the best medicine.

“Once you hit your late twenties, your body mechanism begins to slow down. Keep this in mind if you are planning to start or resume sports after a break. The choice of the game has to change as you grow older,” says Dr Yash Gulati, senior consultant, orthopaedic surgeon, Indraprastha Apollo, Delhi. He prescribes low-contact games like swimming, golf, badminton and tennis and warns against soccer and rugby. “Many a time, men in their 40s or 50s think they can get active by joining a local football team. They start playing soccer with their peer groups or even with their teenage children. Unfortunately, their fitness levels aren’t what they used to be and a competitive game of football can leave an unaccustomed player with injuries ranging from breathlessness, muscle pulls or ligament injuries to shin splits and other stress injuries,” he adds. Take it slow, is his mantra. It is important to build stamina through jogging, swimming and stretching before gradually increasing the physical demands that come with a new game. “Even with safe games like golf, it is advisable to take things in small doses if one wants to avoid ailments like Golfer’s Elbow (pain on the inside of the elbow),” he says.

But many exciting sports, generally associated with the youth, are surprisingly suitable for older people. Vicky Kapoor, director and chief instructor of the Krav Maga India, an organisation that teaches the Israeli self-defence form, says that “anybody from five to 55 can learn the moves if they aren’t suffering from serious heart or joint problems or abnormally high blood pressure”. At the organisation’s Delhi centre, older students get a separate set of strength training and stamina building exercises until they are ready to push the limits. Even Parkour, the rapid obstacle running sport that Daniel Craig made famous in Casino Royale, can be practised by fathers and sons alike, though at different levels. “An older person might not be able to do the front and back somersaults or leap from one rooftop to another, but he can jump over park benches and take on obstacles like trees if he is fit enough. Of course, one needs to hit the gym and exercise regularly,” says Amlen Singha of Parkour India.

PC Bhalla, now in his late sixties, has found that the perfect place for older men and women is the golf course. “One spends close to four hours in the open, amid nature in the company of like-minded people,” says Bhalla, who visits plays twice a week.
We got to the point where in every major city in India we have Krav-Maga.
5 years back, no one believed, we could achieve this.
In our Krav-Maga family, we have something that I have seen in battle between my soldiers.
In Hebrew, the bible language it pronounced “re ut”.
It is describing as a unique bond in group.
You care more about your friend than you care about yourself.
And your friends interest coming always before your self interest.
You have “re ut” in Krav-Maga India.
It makes me proud to be part of it.
I can not finish without thanking the person who make it all possible
Mr Vicky Kapoor.
Thank you, my friend I will see you soon,
Best
